ENGRAVER FROM CIENFUEGOS ALTERS THE PEACE OF HEAVEN

“Cienfuegos. De nuestro corresponsal. Urgent Han llegado versiones a esta corresponsalía de la llegada en tropel, hasta la bóveda celeste, de un sinnúmero de ángeles sin cabeza, vestidos en ropajes multicolores, que provendrían – según estas versiones – de la localidad de Cienfuegos, Cuba.

“Cienfuegos. From our correspondent. Urgent. Certain versions reached this correspondent referring to the arrival to the blue canopy of the skies of a multitude of headless angels, dressed in colorful garments who are said to come from Cienfuegos, Cuba.

Esta extraña visita ha perturbado la paz del Altísimo, quien habría enviado sus quejas por intermedio del una comitiva de Cardenales, que se encuentra aún debatiendo la forma de encarar esta inédita situación que podría derivarse en una disputa vecinal entre terrícolas y espíritus divinos.

This strange visit has altered the peace of its Highness, who would have sent his complain through a retinue of Cardinals who are still debating how to handle this inusual situation that could eventually derive in a dispute between terrestrial beings and divine spirits-

Aunque todavía resta confirmar los dichos, quienes suelen escudriñar los cielos e interesarse por las formas de las nubes, aseguran haber visto salir por la ventana de una vivienda de dicha ciudad, una veintena de aquellos espíritus acéfalos, agitando en forma ruidosa unas enormes alas emplumadas en su esfuerzo por elevarse hasta el último confín del espacio.

Although this is still to be confirmed, some sources who regularly observe the skies and the shape of clouds, assert that they saw about twenty headless angels flying out of a window from that city, shaking their rattly feather wings in their effort to ascend to the last confines of the space.

La policía de la ciudad, advertida por una vecina aterrorizada, mandó rodear la casa, cerrar las calles circundantes y echar inciensos por las azoteas, como forma de evitar contagios, estremecimientos y otras manifestaciones del temor popular ante las extrañas derivaciones del afán artístico de un amable grabador local, de nombre Rafael.

The local police, adverted by a terrified neighbor, ordered the house to be surrounded, the nearby streets closed and dispersed incense from the height of the roofs to prevent infections, tremors and other possible repercussions derived from the artistic endeavors of a gentle local engraver, by the name of Rafael.

Relatan algunos observadores, que el mencionado grabador (que comparan con el Ingenioso Hidalgo, también conocido como el Caballero de la Triste Figura) tanto se ha sumergido en el mundo de sus sueños y su creatividad, que ha perdido ya el sentido de la realidad, de la mesura y de la prudencia, rodeándose de seres imaginarios, provenientes de las más profundas circunvoluciones de su cerebro, como los ángeles sin cabeza o los pasajeros de los buses rojos. De esa forma, con el tiempo ha empezado a confundir a unos con otros, a los vivos con los muertos y los reales con los irreales. Dichos observadores subrayan la llamativa semejanza con el Caballero Andante y tomando la obra de Cervantes Saavedra, destacan este párrafo:
“se enfrascó tanto en su letura, que se le pasaban las noches leyendo de claro en claro, y los días de turbio en turbio; y así, del poco dormir y del mucho leer, se le secó el cerebro de manera que vino a perder el juicio. Llenósele la fantasía de todo aquello que leía en los libros, así de encantamentos como de pendencias, batallas, desafíos, heridas, requiebros, amores, tormentas y disparates imposibles; y asentósele de tal modo en la imaginación que era verdad toda aquella máquina de aquellas soñadas invenciones que leía, que para él no había otra historia más cierta en el mundo”.

Some observers have mentioned that the aforementioned engraver (who they compare to the Quixote, also known as the Knight of the Woeful Countenance) immersed in his own world of dreams and his creations, has completely lost his sense of reality, judgment and prudence by surrounding himself with imaginary beings coming from the deepest circumvolutions of his brain, like the headless angels of the passengers of the red buses. As a result, he has started to confuse the living with the dead and the real with the unreal. The same observers have noted a clear similarity between the engraver and the knight errant Don Quixote particularly as described in the following paragraph:
…”he became so absorbed in his books that he spent his nights from sunset to sunrise, and his days from dawn to dark, poring over them; and what with little sleep and much reading his brains got so dry that he lost his wits. His fancy grew full of what he used to read about in his books, enchantments, quarrels, battles, challenges, wounds, wooings, loves, agonies, and all sorts of impossible nonsense; and it so possessed his mind that the whole fabric of invention and fancy he read of was true, that to him no history in the world had more reality in it”.

En Cienfuegos ya nadie lo duda: se trata de una reencarnación del personaje Cervantino en grabador cubano. Para confirmar sus dichos observan que Miguel, rima con Rafael. Que Cervantes comienza con la letra C, al igual que Cáceres. Y que ambos nombres tienen una cantidad de letras impar. Por último, que Saavedra esconde en su texto una misteriosa letra V, que también campea en el nombre Valladares, al igual que las tres letras A, la V, la S y la D. En base a estas pruebas irrefutables, a estos válidos testimonios y a la existencia de presunciones graves, precisas y concordantes, el Intendente del lugar ha resuelto convocar a una asamblea en el vecindario, que deberá analizar el caso, oír la queja de los Cardenales y, eventualmente, disponer el reenvío del grabador al pasado, a la época en que pertenece y su inmediato abandono del siglo veintiuno, donde no se admiten somnolencias, invenciones, ni fantasías.

By now, everybody in Cienfuegos is convinced that the Cervantes character has been reincarnated into a local engraver. To confirm their conclusion they remark that the word Miguel rhymes with Rafael. That the name Cervantes starts with a C, the same as in Cáceres. And both names have the same odd number of letters. Last but not least, in the name Saavedra the mysterious letter V is found hidden – which is also in Valladares – the same as the letters A, S and D. Based on such irrefutable evidence, valid testimonies and the existence of presumptive evidence, the major of the city has convened a neighborhood council meeting to analyze the case, hear the complaint of the Cardinals and, eventually, resolve to send back the engraver to the past, to the time where he belongs and his immediate exclusion from the twentieth century where no somnolences, inventions or fantasies are allowed.

Es entonces muy probable que en las próximas horas haya un desenlace en esta situación que ha tenido en vilo a toda la población de Cienfuegos e inquieto al Reino de los Cielos. Por lo pronto, se presume que los ángeles serán devueltos por el Altísimo a efectos de que regresen a sus cartulinas y permanezcan dentro de sus marcos, sin perturbar el inmutable Orden Divino. Respecto de los buses, es probable que se les encuentre un destino en las calles de la ciudad de Buenos Aires, bien distantes de la Perla del Caribe. En cuanto al ingenuo grabador, que tantos desórdenes ha causado con sus desatinos, ya se le está preparando un lugar en La Mancha, sobre una bella colina, donde giran molinos de viento y pacen ovejas con sus corderos, a comienzos del siglo diecisiete, como corresponde a la vocación e inclinaciones del artista.

Therefore, it is very probable that in the next hours this situation that has kept the whole population of Cienfuegos on tenterhooks and gravely disturbed the Kindgom of Heaven, will finally be resolved. Meanwhile, it is believed that the angels will be returned by his Highness so that they return to their cardboards and stay within their frames, avoiding any further disruption to the Divine Order. With respect to the red buses, they will probable be sent back to a city like Buenos Aires at a good distance from the Pearl of the Caribbean. Finally our naive engraver who caused so many disorders with his foolishnesses, an appropriate place is being prepared in La Mancha on a beautiful hill where several windmills turn their arms and sheep graze with their little lamb – at the beginning of the seventeenth century as required by his vocation and inclinations as an artista.

Este diario, con sus fotógrafos y redactores, se encuentra listo para dar adecuada cobertura a los eventos que se sucederán tan pronto la asamblea llegue a su término y se disponga la devolución de los ángeles y envío del Quijote Cienfueguino al año 1600, de donde nunca debió haberse ido.

This newspaper with his photographers and writers is ready to give full coverage to all the events that will certainly take place as soon as the neighbors’ council meeting is called off, the return of the angels is decided and the remittance of the Quixote from Cienfuegos to the year 1600 is performed – a time where he should had never left at all.
